Bowel Dysfunction

Your pelvic floor is incredibly important for healthy bowel function. Pelvic PT can benefit a variety of conditions affecting the bowel. See below to find out how we might be able to help.

What is bowel dysfunction?

Bowel dysfunction is a broad term that encompasses any condition that affects the normal functioning of the digestive system. It can cause a variety of symptoms, including diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, and gas. Pelvic floor therapy can be used to treat bowel dysfunction caused by pelvic floor dysfunction. Pelvic floor therapy can help to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and improve coordination between the muscles of the bladder, bowel, and rectum. Manual therapy to the abdomen and the spinal regions can also have a positive impact on many bowel conditions.

Common Conditions of Bowel Dysfunction

  • Constipation is a common condition that affects people of all ages. It is characterized by infrequent or difficult bowel movements. Some symptoms of constipation can include infrequent bowel movements (less than 3x per week), hard or dry stool, straining during bowel movements, feeling like the rectum is not fully emptied after a bowel movement, stomach pain or cramps, bloating, and gas.

  • Bowel urgency is a strong, sudden need to have a bowel movement. It can be difficult to control and can lead to involuntary leakage of stool. Bowel urgency is a common symptom of a number of different conditions.

  • Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is the inability to control bowel movements, resulting in the involuntary passage of stool. It can range from an occasional leakage of stool to complete loss of bowel control.

  • A rectocele is a condition in which the rectum bulges into the vagina due to weakened pelvic floor muscles. It is a common condition, especially in women who have given birth. Rectoceles can cause a variety of symptoms, including difficulty emptying the bowels, feeling of fullness or pressure in the vagina, pelvic pain, painful intercourse, straining during bowel movements, and leakage of stool.
