What is Urinary Dysfunction?

Urinary dysfunction is a broad term that encompasses any condition that affects the ability to store or void urine properly. It can include a variety of symptoms, including urinary incontinence, urinary frequency, urinary urgency, and difficulty urinating.

Common Conditions of Urinary Dysfunction

  • Stress urinary incontinence is the most common type of urinary incontinence in women. It occurs when urine leaks out during activities that increase pressure on the bladder, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising.

Stress urinary incontinence is caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles or lack of coordination of the pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscles support the bladder and urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body). When these muscles are weakened, the bladder and urethra may not be able to close properly, which can lead to leakage.

  • Urinary frequency is the need to urinate more often than usual. It is defined as urinating more than eight times per day, or more than twice during the night. Urinary frequency can be caused by a variety of factors.

  • Urinary urge or urge incontinence is a type of incontinence characterized by a sudden, strong urge to urinate that is difficult to control. This can lead to involuntary leakage of urine. Urge incontinence is generally caused by an overactive bladder. The bladder muscle contracts too often, even when it is not full. Urge incontinence can be caused by a number of different factors.

  • Interstiial Cystitis, or Painful Bladder Syndrome is a chronic condition that can cause bladder pain and pressure, as well as the frequent need to urinate. Although there is no clear cure for Painful Bladder Syndrome, but there are a number of things you can do to manage your symptoms and live a full and active life.

  • Cystocele is a condition that occurs when the pelvic floor muscles weaken, allowing the bladder to protrude into the vagina. Urethrocele is a condition that occurs when the pelvic floor muscles weaken, allowing the urethra to protrude into the vagina.

Cystocele and Urethrocele can affect anyone, but are most common in women who have given birth. Cystocele and Urethrocele can cause a variety of symptoms such as pelvic pressure, difficulty emptying the bladder, frequent urination, leakage of urine, and painful intercourse.
